Psychological Types

Attitudes & Functions

Introversion is not a flaw, intuition not mysticism — only your psyche's factory settings.

ESSENCE In Psychological Types (1921), Jung proposed two attitudes of consciousness (extraversion / introversion) and four functions (thinking, feeling, sensation, intuition), yielding eight types. The language was later adapted into the 16 types of MBTI — but Jung's aim was to map the truth that people live by different routes, not to sort them.
A compass of the four functions: thinking, feeling, sensation, intuition

Two Attitudes: Where the Energy Flows

In the extraverted attitude, psychic energy naturally flows outward — to people, events, action. In the introverted, it flows inward — to thought, feeling, meaning. The real difference is not talkativeness but how you recharge: extraverts refill among people; introverts refill in solitude.

Four Functions: the Psyche's Many Hands

Thinking judges true and false; feeling judges value (it is not emotion!); sensation establishes what is real through the senses; intuition scents possibility from the unconscious. Each person has one superior function, one or two auxiliary ones — and an inferior function that is immature, easily hijacked by emotion, and hiding nothing less than the largest room for growth.

Use with Care

Jung insisted types describe preference, not ability. MBTI popularized the language and drew criticism: unstable retest reliability, and a binary split imposed on traits that are actually distributed along a continuum. The healthier use: treat type as a language for self-reflection and mutual understanding, not a hiring filter or a life sentence. Type does not say who you are — only who you are more at home being.

IN LIFE

In Your LifeIn Daily Life

Energy management by type

An introvert scheduling solitude is not antisocial — it is charging.

The "difficult" teammate

Feeling types ask "how are the people"; thinking types ask "is the logic sound." Difference is not hostility but viewpoint.

When the inferior function seizes the wheel

Growing harsher as you tire, obsessive as you panic — under stress the inferior function takes over. It is a rest signal.

Parenting by type

The introverted child needs a recharge room; the intuitive child cannot hear "be realistic." Type helps parents stop bending children into themselves.

Three QuestionsReflections

  1. What is my superior function — and do I use it daily, or keep impersonating something else?
  2. In which moments does my inferior function hijack me?
  3. Can I use the language of type to re-understand one person I long clashed with?
