Ego Defenses

The Ego's Dam

Defenses are no sin — just don't let the dam decide when the floodgate opens.

ESSENCE Under pressure from the unconscious, the ego builds defenses: repression, denial, rationalization, identification, regression… They protect us in the short term and bill us in the long term. The Jungian view: the defense is a dam and the unconscious is water — the question is never whether to have a dam, but whether you know what you are holding back.
Wall and inner flame: what the defenses keep out, and what they hold in

The Usual Gates

Repression pushes the unacceptable underwater; denial refuses to admit there is anything below; rationalization tailors a respectable coat for the impulse; identification simply puts on the mask of a person or a tribe (fandom and extremism both run on it); regression retreats to earlier ways of being — and Jung reminds us regression is not all bad: it can be a dive toward the deep layers to draw energy.

Inflation: the Defenses' Credit Card

Jung gave a special description of inflation: the ego flooded by archetypal energy, mistaking itself for the greatness flowing through it — the convert's fervor, the newly powerful's swagger, the internet's righteous mobs. Inflation is the defenses' credit card: spend first, repay later, at ruinous interest. The remedy is homely: humor, manual work, the company of concrete people — anything that reminds the ego whose servant it is.

Use with Honor

A person without defenses does not exist and is not to be envied. Maturity is not demolishing the dam but knowing what you hold back, why, and when to open the sluice. A quick audit: which topics make you want to laugh things off? Which claims must you refute instantly? Where the defenses are most active is exactly where the next lesson lives.

IN LIFE

It in Your LifeIn Daily Life

"I'm not angry"

If the voice trembles while saying it, denial is on duty.

The respectable because

Every finely bound "because" deserves to be opened and checked for an "actually."

Online fervor

An ordinary account's overnight outrage and grandiosity — group defenses, broadcast live.

Sudden silliness

An adult's inexplicable regressive evenings may be the deep layers requesting resources — don't scold yourself first.

Three QuestionsReflections

  1. Which topics always make me refute or deflect at once?
  2. My favorite defense — what does it protect, and what does it block?
  3. When did I last pay the interest on an inflation?
