Psychic Energy

The Inner Current

The psyche's current never disappears — it only changes course. Find where it went, and you find yourself.

ESSENCE Jung extended libido from "sex drive" to total psychic energy: the current behind thinking, feeling, willing and desiring. It obeys conservation — it never disappears, only moves: the drive you repress, the drive you project, the drive burning in a symptom are all booked somewhere else. To understand psychic energy is to ask: where did my current go?
One river, two destinations: the channel and the undercurrent

From Sex Drive to Life Current

Freud said libido is sexual energy; Jung widened it into total psychic energy — the current that lets an infant suckle, a teenager fall in love, an elder keep faith. It was this widening that broke the two men apart in 1912: once energy is more than sex, the search for meaning, religious impulse and the drive to create all acquire legitimate passports.

Conservation and the Hidden Ledger

Psychic energy behaves like water: dam one channel and it rises over the banks. The energy repressing a wish becomes insomnia; the energy denying an ambition becomes bitterness toward the successful; the energy freezing a grief bursts its banks on some anniversary. The Jungian way to read a symptom: not "what is broken here" but "where did this current want to go, and where has it been rerouted?"

Finding the Channel

A Jungian energy checklist: which activities make you forget time (the natural channel)? Which leave you more tired after resting (the undercurrent in flood)? At life's passages — graduation, midlife, retirement — the old channel runs dry before the new one is dug, and this is exactly when people drift or fall ill: not laziness, but energy waiting for a direction.

IN LIFE

It in Your LifeIn Daily Life

Inexplicable exhaustion

Eight hours of sleep and still tired — perhaps not the body, but dammed-up current burning in the dark.

Where revenge spending comes from

A sternly repressed desire often re-emerges as binge-eating or a cart full of impulse buys — the current remains, only the outlet changed.

The graduation flu

The low fever and drift after a big transition is a dried-up channel's energy looking for a new bed.

The direction of flow

What makes you forget time is your current's easiest channel — the raw data of your values.

Three QuestionsReflections

  1. What has been stealing my current lately?
  2. What is on my "forgot-the-time" list?
  3. Is there a dammed current somewhere, sending me bills?
